Winter Run
45″L x 12″W x 9.5″H
Inspired by a passion for winter steelheading, “Winter Run” showcases a wild steelhead making its way upstream. Steelhead are Rainbow Trout that migrate to sea before returning to their freshwater streams and rivers to spawn. They can grow very large. Having one on the other end of your fishing line can be a heart-pounding experience. But they are elusive. They have been called the fish of a thousand casts; and to catch one also requires a willingness to brave harsh and inclement conditions.
The fish in this piece has been carved out of Picasso marble, and swims through a torrent of gnarled maple windfall. Spalting and burled knobs add a sense of motion and turbulence. It is a commissioned work for a couple who are long-time friends of mine…she, a fisherman’s daughter, and he, a fishing buddy who has endured many cold, wet and exhilaratingly miserable days with me in pursuit of this mythical fish. The dogged determination and hundreds of hours required of this project seem a perfect fit for the subject matter. May it stoke many fond memories of the chase.
A portion of the proceeds from this piece will be donated to conservation efforts to ensure that these legendary creatures live on.
